OpenRC hits the tree

OpenRC 0.2 has hit the tree and is our goal for unmasking to ~arch. It's currently ready for prime time on your ~arch machines. If you'd like to give it a test simply create a /etc/portage/package.unmask/openrc file and fill it with:

>=sys-apps/openrc-0.2
=sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.0*

As always, any issues should be reported to Gentoo's Bugzilla ...

OpenRC & baselayout-2

I know everyone's wondering when this will hit the tree and I have an answer for you. I'm actively working with the necessary people to make this happen. OpenRC 0.1 was my target originally but I was away the weekend after it came out, then Roy announced an ABI break ...

/lib & /bin consistency

One of the things I've occasionally bumped into on a system that's gone south and required some recovery is that tools that exist in /bin and /sbin rely on something in /usr, which is often not mounted at the time.

I was thinking of possibly adding this as a Portage QA ...

Current Happenings

It seems I tend to blog in bursts and then ignore my blog for a while. So in keeping up with that tradition, I'll try to blog a little bit about what I've been working on.

Firstly, I've finally taken the plunge and officially joined the base-system herd. For a very ...

No longer maintaining Gentoo’s HAL

There's a few reasons for this. Mainly because I'm disenfranchised by the development process. Also, many Gentoo users and developers dislike HAL and are against it so I'm constantly fighting an uphill battle. But mainly it's the development process.

For a long time I've felt that the development has been very ...

HAL 0.5.10 and Things TODO before hitting the tree

Basically some people keep asking when HAL 0.5.10 is going to hit the Portage tree. Well there's a few more things that need to be hashed out first.

Do we really want to go with the PolicyKit route? Right now I'm leaning towards yes since this allows for granualar controls of ...

Having HAL ignore devices

Robin was having issues with a CD-ROM drive that caused his system to hard lock whenever HAL was started. Now HAL ships with hal-disable-polling that allows you disable polling of the CD-ROM drive for media changes however this still does not prevent HAL from scanning the drive when HAL starts ...

metadata.xml updates examples

So, Diego and I quickly implemented USE flag descriptions for individual packages by using metadata.xml. I wanted to give everyone a concrete example of what we intended and what's the goal of this project. So, I've added USE flag descriptions to HAL's metadata.xml. To see an example check it out ...

Heimdal & Gentoo… well Kerberos in general

Do you use Heimdal and Gentoo? Do you use Gentoo and are interested in Kerberos? Do you use Kerberos and have an interest in Gentoo? Do you know something about Kerberos and Gentoo?

Well you get the idea. We need a new Heimdal maintainer badly. Please e-mail Seemant and I if ...

USE flag metadata

Well following up Diego's post about the same subject, I too think we need some metadata about what each USE flag does exactly. If you read Diego's post, my original suggestion was to use use.local.desc but Diego suggested actually using metadata.xml.

After some debate in #gentoo-dev about a good syntax we ...
