Name Change

Cardoe wrote this in the wee hours:

I’ve decided to change my last name back to my biological father’s last name, the last name that I was born and had until 10th grade. In 10th grade I changed my last name to my step father’s last name since my biological father had passed away when I was 8 years old. However, my mother and my step father separated over a year ago and after discussing it with my fiancee, Rachel, I had decided to revert back to my previous name.

So, if anyone sees Doug Klima start to pop up in Gentoo and else where in the open source community, that’s just me.

Great Vacation Comes to an End with Some Great News

Cardoe wrote this late at night:

As some people might have noticed (i.e. Steve’s e-mail asking me if I was still alive), I went on vacation last week. My girlfriend, Rachel and I took a vacation aboard the MS Westerdam to the Caribbean. We visited Grand Turk, Tortola, St. Maarten, and Half Moon Cay during our trip.

Grand Turk was nothing more then a glorified dock with some basic shopping on it. However since it is sparsely populated and only really a tourist destination for the last year or so, it is still very clean and new. Rachel and I did some power snorkeling (they give you a little motorized machine that does the swimming for you) and explored several reefs, where we saw many amazing fish and sea creatures. Some of which I’ve only seen in expensive fish store show aquariums and museums while others I had never seen before. We then went out to the edge of the continental shelf and looked at the 7,000 ft drop off. You could see about 50 ft down before it was nothing but black, however the part of the sea wall you could see was amazing with sea life.

Tortola was a bit larger and much more mountainous then Grand Turk, however it didn’t compare to it’s near by relative St. Thomas, which we sailed by and got some good pictures of surrounding islands as we passed. It’s also interesting to note that St. Thomas clearly has AT&T (Cingular) and T-Mobile cell service available and we were able to get signal on our ship as it passed. The dock in Tortola was in Road Town which is the capital of the British Virgin Islands. Road Town was very busy town that had some tourist interest but was clearly not just geared towards tourism. It was an interesting town to walk around but did not offer too much to do after a few short hours of wandering. We found ourselves returning back to the ship early for some R&R.

Next we came to Sint Maarten, as the Dutch spelling goes. The reason I chose the Dutch spelling is that we docked in Philipsburg. Philipsburg is very geared towards tourist shopping and it was here I was able to buy Rachel a present and get a new lens for my Rebel XTi. I have previously visited St. Maarten however my memory of the island is very vague. Initially we took a choppy water taxi ride to downtown and grabbed a cab with friends we met on the ship to the French side. The cab ride was pretty crappy since the cab was really beat up, lacked A/C and the cab driver insisted once we reached the French side that we needed to do his island tour for 4 times the price he agreed to just take us to the French side for various reasons he kept repeating. He did manage to stop at one very nice scenic overlook and we stopped and took pictures. I vaguely remembered the view and upon returning home I found I had a picture taken in the very same spot from almost the same angle from 10 years prior. Upon arriving to Margot, the French side capital, we had finally had enough of the cabby and decided to trek it on our own. Margot appeared to be much cleaner and newer then Philipsburg. The roads were very well kept and freshly paved. There also wasn’t the random run down building with shady looking characters sitting in front in the downtown area. We ended up getting out right in front of an open air market where we immediately found out everything was priced in euros and US dollars, contrary to what our cabby told us. However, no merchant was willing to negotiate in dollars, only in euros. Guess that’s what happens when the dollar is weak and the euro is strong. After browsing this market we found a taxi stand and all the taxis were brand new US cars. We got into a 2007 Ford Explorer for the ride back to Philipsburg for the same price it cost us to get to Margot and as an added kicker, the driver said he’ll take us on the scenic route on the other side of the island that we came, so all in all we got the island tour and a nice ride back for the same price. Upon returning to Philipsburg we unloaded our purchases on the ship and Rachel and I set out to buy her present and once more took a ride in the water taxi. By now the weather was turning for the worse as Tropical Storm Noel was approaching. The waves in the bay were all white-capping and varying up to 6 ft. As we rode out we watched another water taxi get swamped by a wave and our pilot announced that the downtown pier was closed and he’d have to let us off early. Soon as he pulled into a marina, it began to rain so Rachel and I trekked downtown in the rain and began to shop for her present. We found exactly what she was looking for and after a bit of haggling, I managed to settle on a decent price and we returned to the ship.

Now we had a day at sea which ended in the final formal evening of the trip. It was on this day that I was going to give Rachel her present, which was a diamond necklace. The significance was that I was going to ask her to marry me. Now most people would say, “But shouldn’t it be a ring?” and I would answer yes, however, there was an old family ring waiting for us when we returned to the US so the necklace was my present to her. Since she kind of new it was coming since I explained to her that I was buying her the necklace but not giving it to her right away, that it was a symbolic gift, I had to still figure out how to make it a surprise. I had stored the necklace inside the safe in the room but couldn’t find a single moment to break free to retrieve it (if you ask her about this now she will giggle and nod that she didn’t let me get out of arms reach the whole trip). So when went to play Bingo, I managed to convince her to wait in line with our friends from the ship while I returned to our room to get some cash for the Bingo cards. I retrieved the necklace and hid it in my pocket. After Bingo I tried to convince her to come out onto a secluded part of the outside deck that viewed the ocean but she wanted to get ready for diner. Immediately after getting back to the room she inquired about the necklace and I had told her that I had been trying to give it to her for over a day and couldn’t break free and showed her that I had it in my pocket. So in an attempt to regain the element of surprise I clearly opened the safe in front of her and appeared to place it inside, however I slipped it into my pocket. Once we were ready for dinner I detoured us out onto the outside deck, much to her complaints about her hair being messed up by the wind, and pointed out at the water and said, “Look!”. While she looked, I got down on one knee and proposed. She accepted and so now we’re engaged! As a hint to anyone out there reading this, remember to get the box out of your pocket before kneeing, I made the mistake and was asked, “What are you doing?” Before I managed to get the necklace out of my pocket.

Lastly, we came to Half Moon Cay, which is also known as Little San Salvador Island and is privately owned by the cruise line. It had a beautiful artificial beach, which had some decent snorkeling and amenities. It was here that Rachel got me on my first horse ever. The experience was a bit scary since my horse decided to trot almost immediately and when we went up hill he decided to rear up and leap up the hill, all this while riding English. I was clutching on white knuckled. Once we finished that ride they removed the saddle and put bare back pads on, and actually switched out my horse for a much smaller horse. We were going to go swimming with the horses, that’s all I knew. Almost immediately as I swung myself on the horse one of the handlers smacked my horse in the ass and it took off for the water with the rest of the crowd of people following. Later I found out that the horse I was on was much too small and on top of that I was sitting to far back. I knew I was on a small horse when the water came up to about everyone’s knees while the water came up to almost my mid-chest. To add to this problem, I had no clue where to sit and when they told me to bring my feet back, the horse’s hindquarters connected with the bottoms of my feet and nearly kicked me off the horse. At this point I clutched on for dear life until we got back to the finishing area.

All in all it was a great trip and we met two people that sat across from us, Paul and Christy, and spent a major of our time with them and became great friends. Paul and Christy were actually on their honeymoon, so obviously Rachel and I will have to take our honeymoon on a cruise and invite Paul and Christy.

Just call me Harry Potter

Cardoe wrote this in the wee hours:

So I went swimming with my roommate on Sunday. I tried to swim across the pool underwater but didn’t think I could make it so I wasn’t too considered about the other side. Well…. I made it to the other side… well my skull did. I managed to split my skull just above the hair line by about an inch. It bled nicely. After it finally stopped bleeding there’s a mark from the blood which I can’t get off right now. Why can’t I get it off? Because of the swelling and I can’t rub that hard. It looks like Harry Potter’s little scar so people have been making that joke.

I think I managed to get a slight concussion in the process because I got really tired about 15 min afterwards and I’ve been feeling short term memory loss (i.e. I met some people tonight and I couldn’t for the life of me remember anyone’s names… I’m usually good with that. Some of the people I had to ask twice.)

Either way, I’m a moron. In the words of Carlos Mencia, Dee Dee Dee!

Jenn’s New Mattress

Cardoe wrote this late at night:

So Jenn got a “new” mattress from her first roommate Teri who’s moving to Michigan. We went today over there to pick it up. Jenn freaked out the whole time that we were going to die driving back but she did really good. She kept it to 30mph and we were set. I had a blast lugging the new mattress and boxspring down from Teri’s and into our apartment (read: not).

Since Jenn’s a slave driver and cracked the whip. We lugged out the old stuff to her car and we were going to take it to Goodwill but they were totally closed and locked up, which was a bummer. Rather then drive all the way back home and toss them in the dumpster, we went to Gainesville Place and tossed them there then rushed over to Best Buy.

By the time we got there they were closed but like I told Brittany and Jenn… “I’m kind of a big deal around here. People know me.” and I just walked in and we shopped for like 30 minutes. We looked at camcorders for Brittany and the TV I’m buying with my first paycheck.

The Birthday

Cardoe wrote this late at night:

Let me just start this by saying I have the best roommate in the world. I don’t know how I can top what she did this year for my birthday. It’s been ages since I had “a party” or a gathering for my birthday since it lands right in the middle of break week every year so no one is here. So this year I went to Texas Roadhouse for food and Jenn, Brittany, Nicole, Heather, Dan, Adam and Brian came along. Of course there was a wait and so Jenn bought me a beer. The hostess told me that there were only two tables that could fit us all and one was just sitting there and they were done eating so I volunteered to walk by and give them dirty looks. I won… because by my second lap, they left. There was a waitress there putting out some silverware and I asked if she was going to be our waitress. She said no, some guy would be. I told her that it was my birthday and I picked her. So… she was our waitress. She was awesome. She brought me more beer. On my way to the bathroom another waitress stopped me to tell me she liked my shirt. We talked for a while. On the way out of the bathroom I told her she needed to feel it because the material felt great. She said she was going to ask, so she stood there rubbing my arm. We talked for a while. Then when we were leaving I told her that she should come drink with us and leave work. She said she couldn’t. I asked when she got off and she told me. I told her that was plenty of time left to drink and she said ok and asked for my number. I gave her my number but wasn’t smart enough (read: had beer) to ask for hers. She didn’t call me. Oh well.

When we got home I got a cake that Jenn baked. She made blue icing for it and orange lettering. It tastes great. She did an amazing job. It had these sparkler candles like you find in Baked Alaska.

Jenn scrubbed the whole apartment. It was sparkling clean. It was amazing to see it like that. We haven’t had it that clean in ages. She also paid for everything for me at Roadhouse. Which she didn’t have to do. I tried to talk the waitress into not taking her card and taking mine, but it didn’t work out.

It was good to hang out with Adam and Brian some more. I really miss those guys. I wish I had been in a better time when I lived with them because I really would have had a blast. We got to share old stories that reminded us of good times. Brian Thomas Octavius Xavier Pugh… Adam Gregarious George Piercy Pierce… Douglas Stanford Soloman Ezekel Klima Goldstein…

Brittany is amazing. She got me a Rubix cube, which I can’t solve at all. She solved the bottom and the bottom row at dinner… maybe the 2nd row as well… I don’t remember. I was really impressed. I love Brittany, she always makes me laugh and she’s the Good Baptist.

Nicole is my anchor. She’s always there for me when I need to rant/vent/whatever. I was glad she came along. Apparently I annoyed her at dinner though. I’m sorry Nicole. :(

Dan’s a computer guy like me so we sat there making all sorts of jokes no one else knew. Oh well forget you all! Dan and I also have a similar sense of humor so we can rebound jokes. Heather, Dan’s girlfriend, and Jenn’s old roommate is part of the “old clik”, TCP. But lately we haven’t seen much of her.

All and all it was an outstanding birthday.

Roommate Quotes

Cardoe wrote this at around evening time:

Jenn: Speaking of herpes… where’s my pills?
Doug: …… uh…….. What pills?
Jenn: My birth control.

Jenn: Doug, you missed it. An armadillo was sitting there waiting by our door this morning. He’s my friend. I miss him.
—- Next morning when Jenn wakes up still drunk at 9am and we’re going to McDonald’s so she can get drunk food —-
Jenn: OMG.. What’s that in the road? OMG! It’s my friend! My armadillo friend.
—- Jenn starts crying —-
Doug: What?
Jenn: I killed him. If I didn’t scare him off our doorstep… he wouldn’t have gone on the road this morning and died. I killed my friend! I MISS MY FRIEND…
Doug: I’m glad you’re not driving.

—- Jenn applies makeup on and nearly runs off the road —-
Doug: The road buddy… the road..
—- Jenn nearly runs off the road while focusing on the road —-
Doug: Jenn you drive just as good putting on make up as you do focusing on the road. Girls can’t drive.

Jenn: I wanna do a keg stand!
Scott: You realize you’re in a skirt right?
Jenn: It’s not like you..Where’s my cup? Wait. I need my cup.

Jenn: The law school uses Firefox!

Cardoe wrote this mid-afternoon:

Today started off like any other day, decided to go to Publix and Moe’s. At some point on the ride back home John Mayer’s Your Body is a Wonderland came on. Now I used to like this song back when I was dating Jamie because we’d hear this song in the car on the way home and then go make out and that was fun. Obviously once we broke up I didn’t want to hear this song anymore but now liked John Mayer’s other songs about missing some girl that left and hoping she’d come back. I eventually got past that phase and tossed the CD to some deep dark corner of my car. Well the song came on the radio randomly (Rock 104… weird I know) and rather being bothered by it I wasn’t. I ended up digging out the John Mayer CD and putting it in and just as I did I came to my apartment so instead I drove around and drove around Gainesville. I skipped through most of the CD because all he does is whine about wanting some girl back and give in a little more trying to make the girls happy. I realized that I’ve been trapped in that situation for a whole bunch of my life, especially Jamie. I was stuck giving in to her hoping I could keep her happy but in the end that didn’t work. What I had to do is put my foot down, draw a line in the sand and make it a give and take rather then constantly give.

But in all this I realized that I was actually happy with my life. For the first time in a long time I wasn’t Monday morning quarterbacking and thinking “if I had done this differently maybe she wouldn’t have left” or over-analyzing other choices in my life. I realized I was just plain happy and life is wide open, learn from your past but don’t dwell. Look forward to what’s coming, not what has past. And a big one, you can’t make everyone happy all of the time, you just end up being unhappy yourself. I think the best motto is one from the financial world, “Always pay yourself first” but instead always make sure you’re happy first then worry about the rest. Because people come and go, but you always stay with yourself.

Well enough incoherent rambling on my part all that matters is that I’m happy. Now to try to scratch this itch I have… Girls come and go but I find I can’t seem to forget about Jeanne and now that I know she misses me and can’t forget about me, it’s time to try this again…. when she’s ready.

The Ex-Girlfriend

Cardoe wrote this at around evening time:

So just over a week ago was my ex-girlfriend’s 23 birthday, so I decided I would call Jamie and wish her a Happy Birthday. Now I haven’t really blogged too much about her but as many of my friends know, she’s been on my mind a whole lot this past year. I’ve missed her a lot. And I did the real hard thing last year at the end of the Spring semester and told her that she couldn’t come over any more, she couldn’t park at my apartment and have me drive her to class, she couldn’t come over and have lunch with me anymore. It was hard at the time but it really was for the best. In that phone conversation I found out that the guy she started dating a few months back had proposed and she’d accepted. I thought hearing this would upset me but it didn’t upset me like I thought it would. I kept waiting for it to upset me but it never did upset me too much. The best analogy I can think of that compares how I felt is like that of a big thunderstorm banging and clanging around and pouring down rain. Once it passes and it’s getting sunny out again, but in the distance you can still see those dark clouds as they keep passing and still rumbling.

In the end, a part of me will always love her and care about her and want the best for her. She brought a lot of sunshine to my life when we were together and we had a great time together, and I’ll always be grateful for the time we spent together.

Do I lose nerd points?

Cardoe wrote this in the wee hours:

I passed on working on some code and ebuilds I needed to work on to go to the mall and buy some clothes at American Eagle and Hollister. Anyway, it was kind of funny to me.

Jenn’s Picky About Her Milk

Cardoe wrote this late at night:

Something that I will always remember and Jenn will never let me forget is the fact that I’m really really really bad at telling when milk is bad. So I got a glass of milk but it was on the expiration date so I wasn’t sure if it was bad. I took a sip and it tasted like milk to me. I asked Jenn if she thought it was bad and she took the glass and took a sip. I have never seen someone run so fast to the sink and start spitting up as quickly as possible. Apparently the milk was bad and I couldn’t tell. I guess my taste buds can’t detect the level of milk spoiledness.

Jenn doesn’t hate me and hasn’t tried to poison me, she just gives me a hardtime about it. So that automatically makes her an awesome roommate. She’s an awesome roommate for a lot of reasons but this is just a funny one.
