0-day release notice bugs being created

Cardoe wrote this just before lunchtime:

I think this is going to be my new solution to combating this issue. For each bug and subsequent dup bug I get for 0-day notices I will just wait that many days before actually adding the package to Portage… irregardless if I have bumped the package locally for myself.

Now obviously stupidity has to be punishable so for every release that the ChangeLog is copied and pasted into the body of the bug report and the following or similar appears:

“Thanks to Doug Goldstein ‘cardoe$gentoo&org’ for his contributions to this release.”

and you assign the bug to me… I will wait a week to add the new version to Portage.

This solution probably won’t help but annoy me and I annoy you. I’ll always win because I have the commit access.

Then again I just hit Flameeyes with a 0-day report… but that was on a patch. Oh well.. he can punish me now.

Hardware Laying About

Cardoe wrote this in the wee hours:

Hoping that someone might have some hardware laying about that I could aquire cheaply to help me hack on MythTV. Currently I have a Genesi hardware based PPC with a GeForce2 in it (with no TV out and no XvMC) and my x86 system that had a GeForce3 with TVout but the card decided it was time to kick the bucket so now I have an old old Trident card with less then 1mb on it so there’s no chance of getting MythTV to run on it. I was wondering if anyone had an ATI Radeon 9200-ish (or better like a 9500) for the PPC board or possilby a GeForce4 MX or something like that for the x86 system.

I’m in the US (specifically Florida) so I’ll have to take into consideration the cost of shipping.

Linux World Expo & Gentoo US Meetup

Cardoe wrote this late at night:

So I really wanted to go to this year’s Linux World Expo in Boston but alas I don’t think I can afford it on my meager college budget but I do want to go in August to the LWE in San Franciso. I hope a bunch of developers will go.

Another thing I was considering, I know people say that the European Gentoo devs are more organized and us Americans are less so. They also get to meet up more often and have dev-only meet ups. So I was thinking of doing one sometime this winter down here in Florida, specifically the University of Florida. I figured winter would be good for some of you in the horrible climates. Also that gives me more time to prepare.

Now granted Gainesville is a small airport so it’s expensive but flights planned well in advance aren’t expensive. So most likely I’d have to look into this for Jacksonville or Orlando. However University of Florida has a large Gentoo roll out and some departments are willing to assist in hosting this event. So we’ll see which location works out to be the best.

My idea is to have one day for developer only discussions or meetings and another day or two for user community as well.
But if no one is interested I won’t do any leg work involved in researching the possibility.

Cardoe wrote this mid-afternoon:

Today started off like any other day, decided to go to Publix and Moe’s. At some point on the ride back home John Mayer’s Your Body is a Wonderland came on. Now I used to like this song back when I was dating Jamie because we’d hear this song in the car on the way home and then go make out and that was fun. Obviously once we broke up I didn’t want to hear this song anymore but now liked John Mayer’s other songs about missing some girl that left and hoping she’d come back. I eventually got past that phase and tossed the CD to some deep dark corner of my car. Well the song came on the radio randomly (Rock 104… weird I know) and rather being bothered by it I wasn’t. I ended up digging out the John Mayer CD and putting it in and just as I did I came to my apartment so instead I drove around and drove around Gainesville. I skipped through most of the CD because all he does is whine about wanting some girl back and give in a little more trying to make the girls happy. I realized that I’ve been trapped in that situation for a whole bunch of my life, especially Jamie. I was stuck giving in to her hoping I could keep her happy but in the end that didn’t work. What I had to do is put my foot down, draw a line in the sand and make it a give and take rather then constantly give.

But in all this I realized that I was actually happy with my life. For the first time in a long time I wasn’t Monday morning quarterbacking and thinking “if I had done this differently maybe she wouldn’t have left” or over-analyzing other choices in my life. I realized I was just plain happy and life is wide open, learn from your past but don’t dwell. Look forward to what’s coming, not what has past. And a big one, you can’t make everyone happy all of the time, you just end up being unhappy yourself. I think the best motto is one from the financial world, “Always pay yourself first” but instead always make sure you’re happy first then worry about the rest. Because people come and go, but you always stay with yourself.

Well enough incoherent rambling on my part all that matters is that I’m happy. Now to try to scratch this itch I have… Girls come and go but I find I can’t seem to forget about Jeanne and now that I know she misses me and can’t forget about me, it’s time to try this again…. when she’s ready.

Gentoo 2006.0 Live CD Installer

Cardoe wrote this just before lunchtime:

So I got a new box at work today so we decided to try out the Gentoo 2006.0 Live CD Installer on it. I was very impressed. The installation went very smooth and everything worked as billed. I found 3 minor typos that have already been fixed in CVS (2 problems with a space and 1 where there was a , instead of a .). The only other thing is the huge USE=”" in /etc/make.conf which contains way more then necessary. But agaffney already is working on that. I would very much recommend this to people who are familiar with the Gentoo install process and just want a quick way to setup an additional box.
On a side note, we’re seeding the 2006.0 x86 LiveCD, x86 Install, amd64 Install CDs at the office and so far we’ve uploaded 25GB.
