Graphics HOWTOs?

Cardoe wrote this at around evening time:

So I always joke to friends and other people that I’m an idiot when it comes to graphics. And really, I am. I can use GIMP to scale, crop and rotate an image and I can also hand erase the background, copy the image and paste it onto a transparent background and that’s it. I can’t do anything else with GIMP. I know what everyone is going to say, “click things and experiment.” Yeah but I don’t know what click combinations do what. Much like someone doesn’t know how to write a graphics app by typing some stuff into an editor and running gcc on it.

So really this posting is for all of you graphics idiots out there like me. Here’s a list of links, if anyone’s got anymore good links, please feel free to post them.

Now if anyone knows how to make a background like F-Spot has on their website… that would be cool.

GUG, the GIMP User Group, has a few nice tutorials on their web site at http://gug.sunsite.dk/?page=tutorials

I also use GIMP.. and Photoshop.
I must say that many things are possible to do in GIMP, but that require exploring a lot, and experimenting a lot. Some features are a bit duplicate or not well integrated. Sometimes it’s a real pain and it feels like the devs never made much more than simple graphics with GIMP.

And in photoshop you also have to experiment. And combine stuff to make what you want. But honestly, it has nothing to see. It’s much easier and you dont have to ask yourself where the hell the option is hidden every two clicks.
This is what gimp is missing, and honestly, you’re not a gfx newbie because you don’t find them. They’re NOT easy to find at all in GIMP, the right options to make the combinations you expect. Even for simple things.

The lazy ones among us may like to watch a video:

Tileable textures are pretty cool, here’s a tutorial that seems to work alright (I’ve used it before with some decent results):

Then there’s also a plugin that I’d never heard of, but may work well:

I’ve got to agree with gimp’s posting above. I still find it much easier to work with Photoshop (under WINE) than using Gimp. I’ve tried, believe me. But Gimp is far less intuitive than Photoshop. I think Gimp devs would do well to focus on usability for /average/ users. That is, dumb it down. We aren’t all graphics geeks, even if we are geeks of some other flavor.

    Maybe I should try GimpShop…
