MythTV User Feedback
Cardoe wrote this late at night:
Well I’m dedicating a lot more time towards reworking and fixing MythTV. I’d really love to hear what some users of it have to say they’d like to see different and added to MythTV.
I might be getting a paid bounty by a set top box manufacture to work on MythTV related work for them. That’s about all I can say about it.
But visit my MythTV site @ https://dev.cardoe.com/myth/ and feel free to make some suggestions there.

I would like to see the dependancy of mysql removed. It would be better to make it database independant.

How about removal of mysql from the frontend? You’re still going to need a database for the backend.

Getting rid of the msyql dep on the frontend would be a great start.
A backend DB is fine but I don’t think making it depend on any one DB is a good thing. Any SQL compliant db should be useable. IMHO.

I’ll be using it as soon as 2.6.12 comes out hopefully! It has the driver for my DVB box. The recent delays in kernel development have been getting me very frustrated! I’ll let you know if I need anything then.

I would like to see some independancy of xmltv. I looked into the source code of myth-tv and all xmltv stuff is hardcoded into it. If there is a new version of xmltv with a new grabber, you have to wait till the boys from mythtv implements them in the new release or do some nasty tweaking.
The id of a DB independant mythbackend is something i like too. I have firebird running already on my server and it would be nice to reuse it in stead of mysql.

I haven’t used mythtv in a while so this might be obsolete thoughts. I went back to xine launched via a ssh session…
My setup is a EPIA-M10000 board controlled via, ssh and/or a ATI Remote Wonder.
First of all I didn’t need any TV-support but it wasn’t possible to remove that module. Shure it would ne nice to brows the tv-listning, but no need for viewing tv. So make tv support optional.
Second, it was god awfully slow. Trying to configure the beast over a ssh tunnel was just not bearable. And doing it locally was not possible becuase my box has no keyboard. A texbased config would be nice.
Third, a usable remote controll configuration utility.
Forth, onscreen kbd for text input via mouse.

How about adding zeroconf. Frontends dectecting and connecting to the backends automatically would be nice.

How about fixing the issue with timeshifting live tv on firewire connected to cable boxes. Also, most of the time, livetv starts jittery, like playback started before the buffer got filled. A pause and unpause fixes this, and it’s been on my box and a friend’s m10000 box that works fine other than that. I’ve talked to Jarod about this in the channel and his stance seems to be since he doesn’t watch live tv and only records, it’s not a big deal. I don’t know if this is the kind of thing you meant, but it’s just another thing in a long list of almost-working problems I’ve had since I started trying mythtv a long time ago. It’s been making me think of just waiting until a 1.0 release of mythtv before attempting to get mythtv working again…

As far as making TV viewing optional. That’s entirely pointless. That’s the point of this program. If you just want TV listing… there’s at least 20 programs out there that do just that.
As far as zeroconf, I already have a patch for that but it’s not up to date.

Hey,
Mythtv works great but I had hell installing it on my dual-opteron system. This post held a nugget that should probably appear closer to the surface in the docs and HOWTO’s.

First off, I have been using MythTV for a few months, and I love it.
What I would like to see is a user authentication/login of some kind. At the moment, any user on my computer can delete all my recordings and schedualings. I suppose for a dedicated set-top box this doesn’t matter, but it would be nice.
I would also like to see a builtin option to export to divx/xvid. I manually export to with nuvexport, but it would be nice if it would get encoded live. I will have to look in to scripting mythtranscode and ffmpeg in to a userjob.
Other then those, I love MythTV. MythWeb makes a great addition(the other reason authentication would help) and I use it for most of my schedualling. Thanks for a great product.
Andrew.
